Protect Skin From UV Rays | Provenance Aesthetics and Wellness

UV Skin Protection Tips

It’s unpleasant to think about, but a bright and sunny summer day may also offer an undercurrent of danger. UV (ultraviolet) rays are emitted not only by the sun, but also some artificial forms, such as tanning beds. Although they may offer some benefits, such as producing Vitamin D within the body, they can be extremely harmful. They can be so harmful in fact, that the The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has named July as Ultraviolet (UV) Safety Month as a way to raise awareness of the dangers of ultraviolet rays in relation to cancers of the skin, eyes, and lips. In honor of UV Safety Month, we’ve pulled together top UV skin protection tips and advice.

The Dangers Of UV Rays

Not only do UV rays cause issues with the look and feel of your skin, they can be downright dangerous for some people. Squamous cell cancer, basal cell cancer, and melanoma are the most common types of skin cancer and that can lead to significant illness or even death. If eye protection isn’t worn when being exposed to UV rays, people can suffer serious eye diseases as well. Too much exposure to UV rays can also weaken the immune system leading to chronic illness or disease. Beyond the health risks, UV rays are responsible for the premature aging of skin and can cause wrinkles, unsightly dark spots, or leathery skin.

UV Safety Tips

If you’re planning on spending some time outdoors in the sun, it’s important to find the right UV protection and take special precautions, especially if you have fair skin, light eyes and light hair. Here are some UV safety tips:

  • Try to cover up. Thankfully for fashionistas, there are a myriad of attractive sunglasses and hats available that also offer great UV protection. Making sure your eyes and face are covered and wearing a shirt or bottoms that offer UV protection is advisable during a sunny day. Wide-brimmed hats and wrap-around sunglasses are the best bets for face UV protection.

  • Find some shade. It’s hot in Texas and the UV rays are extremely powerful. If you’re going to be outside during the day, try to find a shaded area where you can take frequent breaks from sun exposure. Better yet, stay out of the sun during the hours of 10 am to 4pm when the sun’s rays are their most powerful.

  • Choose the correct sunscreen. Be sure to opt for a sunscreen that protects against both UVB and UVA rays and apply it at least once every two hours, allowing for adequate drying time. A minimum SPF of 30 is advisable for most people.

  • Keep children safe. Although youthful and resilient, childrens’ skin is super-sensitive and therefore requires special attention in the sun. Using proper sunscreen and clothing can help protect them from sunburns or more dangerous skin issues down the road.

  • Avoid tanning beds. Indoor tanning beds can be extremely dangerous, especially for younger adults or adolescents. These can significantly increase the chances of skin cancers down the road, so it’s best to avoid them or opt for another solution such as spray-tanning or an at home sunless tanner.
